The story goes like this:
Yesterday Pops came by to check on his grandsons (and to let me go to the gym kid-free, score). When I come home he says "Kid told me that he was maybe getting a G-U-I-T-A-R for Christmas".
Yesterday Pops came by to check on his grandsons (and to let me go to the gym kid-free, score). When I come home he says "Kid told me that he was maybe getting a G-U-I-T-A-R for Christmas".
I said, "well, he has asked for one ever since his past one broke. We told him we would maybe think about it for Christmas. That and a B-I-K-E that he as been begging for".
(obviously we are spelling these words due to the fact that such subjects are gallivanting around)
Pops: "Why wait on the B-I-K-E?"
Me: "Well, we don't just want to buy him things just because. Christmas is a good time to get a big item like that".
Pops: "I see your point. But I would like to get one for him. Now. I think he needs it."
Me: "Wow" (at this point I'm partly shocked, partially not surprised as he tends to get very passionate about certain topics and goes full force until the mission is completed--sounds familiar....hmmmn, that's what I love about him!)
Pops: "I'm leaving. I'll call you after it's all assembled".
And it was just like that.
Today he showed up and surprised Kid with a big, red, shiny, Lightning McQueen bike. And Kid was beyond thrilled.
The unveiling:
What was precious was that Pops was reminiscing about assembling Daddy Mock's first "Hulk" bike as a young boy. He said it really brought him joy to do such a thing... so much joy, in fact, I heard him not once but twice refer to Kid as "Jason" (Daddy Mock). I didn't correct him. It was a simple case of deja vu for him. And if you were to see how cautious and careful Kid was at learning his new skill, it was definite deja vu (from what I hear what Daddy Mock was like).
Now this one, on the other hand...far from that. Already attempting full standing tricks on his brother's seat. He's quite enchanted with the whole process of a big-boy bike. He watched all day in awe at his big brother cruising so quickly on the streets!
Later in the afternoon, I took Kid to one of our favorite trails. I enjoyed the second walk for the day, my sciatic nerve did not, however. But catching him in his glory of boyhood was worth it all.
(Not to mention his appetite for dinner was quite intense... it's been weeks since he's eaten more than a few bites!)
Thank you Papa and Gigi for blessing this Kid with the coolest gift ever! It was quite surreal seeing my baby riding a bike!
Kid has not only been talking about his bike all day, but mentioning how thankful he is for it. Melt my heart. Tonight during prayer time, he thanked God for the tires and all the parts on it and thanked God that Papa and Gigi had the money to buy it. When the guilt comes on regarding my goal for keeping toys and consuming minimal, hearing that come from my 3-yr-old's mouth makes me feel a wee bit better about letting him have a brand new big red bike.
